Sunday at Myeongdong Cathedral

Sunday, January 8, 2017

It was a sunny Sunday in Myeongdong, and while the alleys got busier and busier as the clock ticks, we decided to go for a walk to the Myeongdong Cathedral. The Cathedral offers an English Mass during Sundays at 9 am, that's why we headed on early to be able to attend it.

It was just a 5-8 minute walk from the largest Uniqlo store in Korea (Myeongdong Branch). While walking, we saw a Porridge Shop that has a long queue of customers. We were really eager to try it out since Korea's porridge is a lot different than that of Manila but we will be late for the mass. I'll talk about it more on a separate blogpost.

Myeongdong Cathedral, located at the heart of downtown Seoul, is said to be the first Roman Catholic parish church in Korea and the first Gothic building ever built in the country.

Embedded in it's architectural style are bricks of historic culture that only Seoul can offer. I feel like I'm walking around the gardens of heaven because of its serene and peaceful atmosphere. At the back of the cathedral is St. Mary's garden where you can quietly contemplate and rest. When you passed by during lunch time here, you can hear pipe organs playing. The Cathedral also houses the remains of certain bishops who have been part of the journey of the Catholic community in Seoul.

There are also tourist spots near the cathedral namely Namdaemun Market, Seoul Tower, and Namsangol Hanok Village.

Autumn colors suits the Cathedral perfectly, doesn't it?

You won't regret dropping by at this historical landmark as it will give you a tranquil vibe you won't feel anywhere else in the metropolis. :)

How to get here:

1. Take Myeongdong Station Line 4 Exit 6.
2. Turn left on Myeongdong 8-gil.
3. Turn right on Myeongdong-gil. Continue straight until you see the Cathederal at your right.
